Setting the right price & understanding the shipping cost

First time seller on Amazon here. Preparing my first FBA shipment but a little bit confused about setting prices for my listings (mostly selling used dvds/games). When I scan the bar code using the Seller app, it states the lowest price is £11.24 for example, but when I click on the “list” icon, Amazon wants me to match a different price, namely £9.98. The lowest offer by the other user is £9.09+2.15 postage, which works out at £11.24, but for some reason Amazon wants me to match the price with the second lowest seller, which is £9.98 + £1.26. (£11.24 in total).

Could someone please explain the logic behind this? If I set my price at 9.98, how much postage will a customer have to pay if they choose to buy from me? Just what am I competing here against in terms of price?

If you are selling on FBA you can’t set postage so the price you set should be the total price you want for the item.

Often an FBA offer is a little bit more expensive than a competitors FBM offer. Even with a more expensive offer you are more likely to win the buy box and more likely to get sales (assuming you are selling in the UK)

You are free to set whatever price you want for an item so set the price to where you think you would make the best profit and still get sales…keeping in mind that FBA alone drives more sales. However be aware that Amazon can set competitive pricing and stop offers if they deem your price is too high.

I can’t explain the logic, Amazon will often suggest that you match the current featured offer price, or the lowest price, but it is that… a suggestion, You don’t actually have to sell at that price, you have to sell at a price that you are happy with that makes you the profit you want to receive without going too high so that you don’t ever sell.

Regarding the postage, it has nothing to do with the price you choose to sell your book at.

However as you are FBA it is nothing you need to worry about, Amazon will charge customers that don’t have a prime account whatever postage they have allocated to your product, you can not change it, and you don’t receive it. So when pricing items just forget completely about postage, as 99% of your orders will probably go out with free post.

My advice if you have used games and dvds as a new seller is to try fbm first as its a hard enough market as it is and you don’t want to be wasting money on storage

I’ll keep this in mind, thanks. I am UK seller btw. I have one more question - some of my items will be merchant-fulfilled. Any advice as to how to set my price compared to other FBM sellers, since their postage prices can be quite varied? Do I need to look up how much postage Amazon charges for books/dvds when setting my own price? (Shipping costs for buyers are not displayed when creating a listing as far as I know)
