Is it worth trying to sell in Europe?

Hi - I’m selling about 15-30 units per day in the UK at the moment. Do you think it is worth the extra effort/ cost to try and sell in EU markets? Or should I wait until I am selling a higher volume?

I think I’m mostly put off by thought of having to register for VAT in several countries, which seems complicated. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Your username suggests you are selling foods or supplements? Do you know anything about selling your items in the EU, certification, labelling, responsible person, regulations etc.?

If you manufacture your own goods, then have faith in what your doing and go for it … If your buying white label goods and just relabelling then its all about price… Don’t ever be put off by filling in a bit of paperwork and seeing where life takes you …

You can calculate your mOm or yOy growth. But figuring your future turnover is a guess not 100 percent.

Selling in the EU will be a lot more work. I only sell in the UK and do around 450 sales a day. I see it as something to do once i’ve reached potential within the UK. I guess it depends on your time. If you have enough help to continue growth within the UK and explore the EU then it’s worth at least trying. I just don’t have enough time to try yet.

Why don’t you start by trying the European Fulfilment Network, you do not need to register for VAT in Europe, the costs will be higher buy perhaps a good way to dip your toes in the water.

Another thing to factor in with selling on the Amazon European sites is if your sales volumes are low each month, for example, sub 100 orders per site, it would only take 1 or 2 A-Z’s or negative feedbacks to seriously impact your account health with putting the account at risk.

I stopped selling on the other Amazon sites for this very reason.

No - 6 Years free of the Europeans, its a joy. You actually make more profit stopping, by the time you have jumped over the childish European hoops. Culture of false claims, Italian Thieves etc etc.

Your best plan is avoid it.

Strongly recommend against it to be honest. VAT rules, EPR, carriers not getting stuff in, customers returning things. Honestly if I could turn back time I don’t think I would bother. I am priced into this thing and even if you decide to go in and change your mind for any reason, the exit payments are pretty hefty as well.

You also get the added stress of when your tax advisors get things wrong or a new piece of legislation comes through giving you a whole new heap of hoops to jump through, the endless promises by Amazon to help and then just simply dump you.

The costs of getting stuff there is not economic and so many hidden costs involved. Representation of goods, costs for filing, packaging regs which are only going to get worse as more Countries jump on board.

The registration bit is actually not that complicated, it is trying to get your goods in and keep on top of the pressures that Amazon put on you. Getting ready to sell on Amazon in Europe is assumed to be the biggest hurdle. It is the ongoing hurdles that is the problem.

If you are going to use FBA and put your stock in other countries you need to be VAT registered in each country you hold stock in. It’s a minefield and you will have to pay someone to do your VAT returns. We are a £3m company and we have stopped doing it since Brexit if that gives you any guidance. Just make sure you do your research before jumping in with it.
