If you have 2 shops can you use 1 VAT registration
We currently have one shop and would like to open a second, which would trade under a different name and sell a slightly different range of items. Is this possible whilst remaining under one VAT registration? We would provide a separate bank account and also contact email.

As I understand it you can not have multiple seller accounts unless you apply for an exception.
- You have to be selling a different selection of goods
- You have to have a separate bank account
Amazon clearly want things to be as separate as possible. In theory if you can have multiple accounts you should be able to use the same VAT registration for both as they are the same legal entity. However it would not surprise me in the slightest if as part of Amazon’s attempt to prevent multiple accounts they won’t allow it.

There are two separate questions here, and with respect it’s a little unclear from your initial post which you are asking about. Are you thinking about this from an HMRC, or Amazon, perspective ?
HMRC will generally take the view that it is two businesses only if; the owners are different (some crossover of shared directorship can be okay), and none of the stock, staff or expenses are shared between the two. There are some complexities once you get into Holding Companies with cross-billing of shared services, but that only really applies to very large operations. Just having shops at two premises (even if selling slightly different product ranges) would count as one business for VAT unless you can show some serious separation.
For Amazon, to have two accounts, you’d need two separate bank accounts and product ranges in different categories. If both have the same ownership, you would also need to get written permission from them first. It is quite possible that they would expect each account to be owned by a different legal entity with different VAT numbers, which would cross over with what you could agree with HMRC, but that’s very much Amazon’s call in the first instance.

It’s the person that’s VAT registered, not the business, so yes. Many people do this in the bricks and mortar world.
Whether Amazon would allow you two accounts is another matter. Something they definitely don’t allow is two shops listing in the same categories.
Legally, you’re allowed to keep business and personal sales separate, and your personal sales are not subject to VAT. Ebay allow two accounts to this end, but I don’t think Amazon do last time it was mentioned.

Thanks all. It is a business which is VAT registered and i am only interested from the Amazon point of view currently. The Amazon view will i guess determine whether we have a need for a separate VAT registration. I will apply for an exception and see where we get.
