due to increasing costs i decided to add postage to my listings last week and after having an awful weekends sales i immediately went back to free postage however sales are still really bad, anyone else experienced this?

How much data do you have? I would typically look for more than a single weekend to establish any assumption of trend.
While not conclusive, sales continuing to be bad could be a sign that it wasn’t due to adding postage costs but external factors.
As @Dedez said, the perception of postage costs - especially on Amazon, can be negative - people might be more inclined to pay higher for the item and still receive ‘free’ shipping.
