Avalara/Amazon : Spanish VAT number starting in VIES
11 days ago we received a message by Avalara/Amazon stating that : “Your Amazon seller account contains a local VAT registration number(s) that is not validated or listed in the VAT Information Exchange System of the EU commission ([VIES]).”
It seems that it means that, while all of our VAT number look like FRXXXXX (for France), ITXXXX (for Italy), etc, our ES number looks like N11111, and is therefore not in line with the rest in terms of format. Amazon threatens to remove our ability to sell in Spain without this.
It seems a very complex procedure with a lot a paperwork involved, and we don’t know the first thing about doing this.
Has anybody had to do this? It would be very helpful if you shared a few tips on how to approach this. Thank you!

Have you tried validating ESN11111 in vies?

Hi @BarryM
I have - the “N11111” does not validate - so Amazon sent me a message to update it (which Avalara should have done and did not do at the time of registration).

@Damian1: exact same situation. Please let me know if something gets unblocked.

I got the same message from Amazon about a month ago. I forwarded it so AVASK who sorted all my European VAT registrations and VAT returns as an Amazon partner. They came back and said you can only get the VRIES checkable VAT number is you do lots of B2B sales in Spain and not just B2C and what I have is fine. But from what I understand Amazon are not going to do VAT auto invoice creation for such orders so I don’t know what will happen with such orders so will just wait and see.
FYI my number starts N606 and on Vries I get:
No, invalid VAT number for cross border transactions within the EU (please refer to FAQ, questions 7, 11, 12, 13 and 20 for more information).

Hey @Trading_Direct_Limi1, yes - basically in the same spot. My VAT company Avalara has been doing a horrible job at keeping us in touch.
“But from what I understand Amazon are not going to do VAT auto invoice creation for such orders” : that is my big problem also, indeed, considering how much of an ordeal this has been to set up.
@Damian1: Wow! Avalara has been SO horrible and the process so stressful that I would love to switch. Can I ask:
1/ How do you know you are at the end of the free year? Is this written somewhere?
2/ How is the process of transfering to Simply VAT? I am SO afraid to change the setup that has been so hard to create
Thank you!

I see. I applaud your courage - for this has been too painful to do, not ready to do it all again. It should be simpler in 2021 as Amazon will need to collect VAT on behalf of us sellers.

Hi,
I suggest that you add to your Spanish NIF preffix ES and check if it is activated in ViES. If yes then just update your ES VAT Number in Seller Central.
I had sane issue and surprisingly my Spanish NIF with ES preffix was activated.

I don’t think it is very clear what will happen if we are not registered by the end of the month.
Does it mean that they won’t produce the VAT invoices?
Does it mean the large VAT report will not include those transactions?
Will Spanish B2B customers be made aware that they have to pay more?

I have managed to generate the form 36 but I am unable to submit it.
I have tried contacting the Spanish VAT office. They do not speak any English.
Not sure where to go next.

I’m not really sure what I just did, but I think I just applied for something!
From the VIES page, there was a link to this page -
https://www.agenciatributaria.gob.es/AEAT.sede/tramitacion/ZZ09.shtml
then - [Autoconsulta de operador intracomunitario español: detalle de nombre y dirección]
then - [Solicitud sin certificado]
then - sin identifcation
I used google translate on my phone, and put my name and NIF into the top boxes.
For the box
Importe de la casilla - [84] del modelo 390 del ejercicio 2018 (con decimales separados por coma)
I put 0 and left the check box blank underneath. Selected De operador intracommunitario from the drop down and then submitted.
It appeared to work but I’m not entirely certain this is what I need!
