VAT Registration invalid

Hi there,

I’m having a bit of an issue, one i’ve never had before. My UK VAT number is being rejected and i’m struggling to get it fixed by seller support.

Background:

My VAT number became active Feb 1st and I raised my prices to collect VAT. My vat number didn’t show up on the gov checker for 6 days after my VAT certificate was issued and I was required to pay VAT. During this time I attempted to enter my VAT number and it was rejected (Amazon uses an online checker to verify VAT numbers). Now my VAT number is showing active on the govt checker, the addresses and the company name match. In my opinion, due to the fact the number had been rejected in the past it is now rejected automatically. Either that or Amazons VAT checker takes longer than the govt checker to include a VAT number, this is possible as it has only shown on the Govt checker in the past 2 hours.

Has anyone experienced this and can shed some info on how I can speed up getting this fixed?

I did receive the reply after emailing vat-number-appeals@amazon.com - There seems to be occasions when Amazons system automatically rejects VAT numbers that are currently active, but have been rejected by the system in the past. In my case because I entered my VAT number before it showed as active on the VIES VAT database. Due to changes in how VAT numbers are processed it now takes up to 8 days after you receive your VAT number before it shows as active on this database. If the system is automatically rejecting your number email the above address and have a human manually enter your number on the backend.

I don’t yet know if this will work for me but I will report back.

It may simply be due to the way you have entered your vat number.

I think from memory, that you have to include the GB in front of the number, but it may be the other way around.

Hey @Apex_Design_Crafts,

Have you managed to get this issue resolved?

This is really causing issues it’s been 8 days now, we’ve raised our prices to include VAT and we can run a report for VAT on advertising and Amazon fees but we are paying more in referral fees than we should be (paying 15.5% on price including vat rather than excluding), it will be next to impossible to claim this back we do thousands of pounds of sales per day so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a vat number on there ?

Have you claimed exemption previously in VCS so that amazon send your buyers receipts ? If so, you need to remove that exemption first I believe

Presuming on thousands of pounds worth of sales a day you registered for VAT some time ago ?!
As per hmrc guidance you can reclaim vat paid out on services ie on your seller fees from 6 months prior to registration on your 1st return

This business was only founded in Feb last year. Only crossed the 85k threshold recently and is doing great sales. We launched multiple new products in Q4 which increased our revenue massively.

I will look into this, I don’t recall doing it myself. Any idea where I can check this? I assume VCS is Vat calculation service?

Do you send business buyers receipts manually or does Amazon do it for you ?

Yes

Seller_8IYTW1LPZFPUG

We are sending them manually. I’m wondering whether it’s an issue with the system at this point due to entering the number before it was showing on the online checker, which was a stupid thing that I actually did myself.

You usually are best to wait a few days however, it should come back eventually as OK rather than invalid

You might be best escalating to MD with copy of your vat certificate if its not working any other way

I have sent it over to them and they confirmed it was valid and asked me to re-enter it. I really appreciate your time in helping me with this. Silver lining is I’ve managed to set up vat payments on our other selling platforms and website. I’m really hoping @Winston_Amazon can provide some help, fingers crossed.

Don’t worry about still paying vat on fees atm, you can claim it back on your first return
