VAT Registration invalid

Hi there,

I’m having a bit of an issue, one i’ve never had before. My UK VAT number is being rejected and i’m struggling to get it fixed by seller support.

Background:

My VAT number became active Feb 1st and I raised my prices to collect VAT. My vat number didn’t show up on the gov checker for 6 days after my VAT certificate was issued and I was required to pay VAT. During this time I attempted to enter my VAT number and it was rejected (Amazon uses an online checker to verify VAT numbers). Now my VAT number is showing active on the govt checker, the addresses and the company name match. In my opinion, due to the fact the number had been rejected in the past it is now rejected automatically. Either that or Amazons VAT checker takes longer than the govt checker to include a VAT number, this is possible as it has only shown on the Govt checker in the past 2 hours.

Has anyone experienced this and can shed some info on how I can speed up getting this fixed?

I did receive the reply after emailing vat-number-appeals@amazon.com - There seems to be occasions when Amazons system automatically rejects VAT numbers that are currently active, but have been rejected by the system in the past. In my case because I entered my VAT number before it showed as active on the VIES VAT database. Due to changes in how VAT numbers are processed it now takes up to 8 days after you receive your VAT number before it shows as active on this database. If the system is automatically rejecting your number email the above address and have a human manually enter your number on the backend.

I don’t yet know if this will work for me but I will report back.

It may simply be due to the way you have entered your vat number.

I think from memory, that you have to include the GB in front of the number, but it may be the other way around.

Hey @Apex_Design_Crafts,

Have you managed to get this issue resolved?

You usually are best to wait a few days however, it should come back eventually as OK rather than invalid

You might be best escalating to MD with copy of your vat certificate if its not working any other way

I have sent it over to them and they confirmed it was valid and asked me to re-enter it. I really appreciate your time in helping me with this. Silver lining is I’ve managed to set up vat payments on our other selling platforms and website. I’m really hoping @Winston_Amazon can provide some help, fingers crossed.

Don’t worry about still paying vat on fees atm, you can claim it back on your first return
Make sure your accountant knows

Hey @Apex_Design_Crafts,

Have you contact Seller Support about this VAT issue? If so how did they respond?

Seller_8IYTW1LPZFPUG

Hi Winston,

Thanks for getting back to me. I received a reply from Amazon, they said the number is showing as active and instructed me to remove my VAT number, wait 24 hours and re-enter the number. It was rejected again after 5 minutes with the same error message. They closed off the case and haven’t replied since. I’m really struggling with this one.

Did they provide a reason on why it was declined? You could try reopening the case and informing them that waiting for 24 hours didn’t work.

Is it showing on your seller profile page ?

Do you want to screenshot the vat page and redact a couple of the numbers to show what you are seeing

It would be amazing if Seller Support ever gave a reason why stuff gets declined! It’s usually guesswork.

Unfortunately not Winston, they’ve gone cold since my last email. This is causing me a lot of trouble with accounting, I could really do with speaking with a human. Is that possible? I’m going to email the VAT team again and start the process from scratch with the hope I get through to somebody who will read the entire thread eventually.

Hi Winston,

I received this from the VAT specialists at Amazon today.

" Dear Seller,
Thank you for providing the relevant information. We have validated your VAT number and updated our records. Under normal circumstances, the update should register in your account within 2 business days.

No further action is required from your end. Please don’t hesitate to contact us again if you have any other UK VAT related concerns."

I’ve checked today and my number still shows as rejected, i’m not going to touch anything as per the message above. I hope within 2 days my number will be showing as active? I will report back! This might be helpful for anyone else in this situation in the future.
